Many people who have read books from Mud Flat Press do not know that we also occasionally publish short stories on our website. See https://mudflatpress.com/short-stories/
Featured on the site are entertaining, humorous and thought-provoking short stories by Jack Butler, Alec Clayton, Christon Carvajal, Ricker Winsor, Leah Mueller, and the latest is Kathleen O’Shaunessy delightful “Chicken Fee Nonsense,” also known as “Frying Fee Folly” — a serious but playful letter full of fowl wordplay that she wrote to the Washington State Legislature more than 20 years ago. Yes, a letter to the legislature, not intended to be a short story but presented here as such and published with a delightful illustration by Gabi Clayton.
O’Shaunessy explains, “This is a note I sent to one of our legislators over 20 years ago when the legislature suddenly enacted a new bill restricting small farmers from directly selling pastured poultry to customers and assessing a new fee to these small farmers.”
We are happy that O’Shaunessy allowed us to post the letter as a story on our website. We’re sure you will enjoy reading it, and we encourage you to read the other fine stories on the site and those published in our 2022 short story anthology, Mud Flat Shorts (mostly fiction).
